You've read the article; now learn the rest of the story. Take a deeper look into "Restoring a Missouri River Basin Levee," featured in the 2021 July-August issue of TME.

Read the original article here:

In March 2019, a "bomb cyclone" hit northeastern Nebraska and southeastern South Dakota, bringing an assault of snow and heavy rain that overwhelmed the downstream Missouri River flood control system. After the catastrophic flooding breached a federally managed levee system in northwestern Missouri, an approach that utilized mechanical sand removal and leveraged local subcontractors expedited project completion and increased the final resiliency of the surrounding community.

Key takeaways include:

1. Contracting flexibility and socioeconomic benefits: How Weston leveraged local labor resources and equipment to efficiently accommodate changing site conditions while economically benefiting affected communities.
2. Contingency planning/execution: How Weston proactively developed and implemented workarounds when appropriate to maintain productivity and schedule requirements.
3. Leveraging geospatial technology: How Weston utilized 3-D modeling, GPS guided equipment, and real-time data acquisition to support operations.
4. Integrating a safety culture: How Weston empowered workers to voice opinions and suggestions around safety and reinforced with a safety reward program.
