| GOALS AND INITIATIVES |
|
I have 6 specific goals for the 2010-2011 academic year:
- Increase the number of active Student Chapters, particularly in cases where there is already a relationship between the Post and a college or university (I have done this very successfully the last 3 years but there is still room to improve)
- Increase Student Membership by surveying Posts with Student Chapters to identify "Best Practices" and develop ideas on how to make Student Membership valued by architecture, engineering and environmental students (I am going to utilize the Student Council President Midshipmen Bryen Roder to lead this effort)
- Ensure one student from each active chapter attends annual Student Leadership Workshop (I need help from the RVPs and Post Presidents on this one!)
- Register academic institutions for all active student chapters since membership is now free (I need help from SAME HQ and the local Posts on this one)
- Establish student chapters at culturally diverse universities (I need help from my Regional Vice Chairs, Rick Cunningham and RVPs on this one)
- Work with Scholarship Task Force to develop tracking program for students at universities (The task force just reported results and best practices to the Board but I will work with the Posts and Scott Prosuch on this).
If you have ideas on how to best accomplish these goals send an e-mail to Ben Matthews at samecollegeoutreach@gmail.com.

| POST MENTORING |
|
Mentoring is one of SAME's most important goals, and toward that end Posts are encouraged to develop College Outreach plans to involve local college and university students and encourage their pursuit of careers in the A/E/C field. Remember, the students you mentor today will be the leaders of tomorrow! I wrote an article on this at http://bit.ly/cecmentor
Posts can work with students toward this goal by:
- Sponsoring a Student Chapter at a local college or university that has a program for students in engineering, architecture or construction.
- Support a Student Leader of your Student Chapter by sending them to the annual Student Leadership Workshop Click here for Nomination Form {DOC]
- If space is available Posts may send a second student from their Student Chapter or a student from a school for which there is no student chapter by paying a $275 registration fee. Click here for Nomination Form {Word Doc}
- Formalizing the creation of a Student Chapter with an endorsed Charter. Click here to view/download a Student Chapter Charter Template.
- Seeking out faculty members that may be SAME members, and get them involved as Faculty Advisors.
- Seeking out former graduates from the local colleges or universities who will be able to connect you with current faculty or students.
- Forwarding the signed Student Chapter Charter to Ben Matthews at samecollegeoutreach@gmail.com who will forward it on to SAME national headquarters.
- Helping with recruitment material to attract student members. Click here to view/download recruitment material. (coming soon)
- Assisting the student chapter by suggesting meeting topics, speakers and field trips to SAME member offices or work sites.
- Letting the students know about job opportunities and internships.
- Encouraging students to be involved with the SAME Student Council.
- Host programs and activities that involve students majoring in engineering, architecture or construction from a local college or university. The activity or program should focus on the mentoring of students.
Recognition is one of the key components in engaging young leaders in the Society. To that end, the Society created two awards that offer Posts a way to recognize the leadership and involvement of college and university students:
The National Student Leadership Medal
The Student Program Certificate of Achievement
Nominations for these annual awards, with supporting materials, are due to SAME HQ no later than January 31st of each year.

| Student Chapters |
|
Student Chapters promote the goals and objectives of SAME, and encourage the advancement of careers in architecture, engineering and construction by connecting college students with professionals in these fields. Students interested in starting a Student Chapter should contact the nearest SAME Post and ask for a mentor to assist them.

| STUDENT COUNCIL |
|
The Student Council serves as a forum for SAME Student Members to interface with the College Outreach Committee in order to provide insight on student issues, and will allow students to network with each other and share ideas about Student Chapters and mentoring programs.
The College Outreach Committee is currently soliciting nominations for Student Council Members and for Student Council leadership positions. Each Post is requested to nominate one student member to the Council. You DO NOT have to have a Student Chapter to nominate a student from your Post. All that is required for the nomination is a brief bio for the student and their contact information. Students wishing to be considered for one of the Council Officer positions should submit a short letter that outlines their leadership experience and past involvement with the society. Nominations for the Student Council Members and for Student Council leadership positions should be submitted to Ben Matthews, P.E., via e-mail samecollegeoutreach@gmail.com.
