SAME Honors VPI Cadet with Student Leadership Medal

New Orleans, La., May 31, 2006—Cadet William G. Rock, a student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va., was presented with the Student Leadership Medal by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) for “outstanding leadership in an SAME Student Chapter or mentoring program.” The award was presented at the SAME Joint Engineer Education and Training Conference & Expo held in New Orleans, La., May 29 –June 1.

According to SAME Executive Director Robert D. Wolff, Ph.D., P.E., F.SAME, “Cadet Rock is a proven leader with a 3.86 GPA in aerospace engineering—the highest GPA of any senior cadet within the College of Engineering.” Wolff also noted that the SAME Student Chapter at the college is now flourishing as a direct result of Cadet Rock’s hard work and dedication.

Cadet Rock serves as Commander for the 70-cadet Echo Company at the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and as the SAME Student Chapter President.

The Virginia Polytechnic Institute Student Chapter was founded in 1937 and chartered in 1957, but remained largely an honorary military society on campus. Cadet Rock spent dozens of hours researching and reconstructing the history and traditions of the student chapter. Through Cadet Rock’s work, the current charter welcomes all engineer students. Cadet members continue to study the organizational history and traditions of SAME as well as participate in a ceremony honoring the founder of modern engineering, a castle-burning ceremony and the citing of the engineering oath before being presented the coveted SAME member cord and ribbon.

The SAME Student Leadership Medal is presented each year to one SAME Student Member “for outstanding leadership in an SAME Student Chapter or mentoring program,” and in organizing and conducting professional development activities under the auspices of SAME.

Cadet Clayton C. Miller of the Peter Kiewit Institute, University of Nebraska, was awarded an Honorable Mention.
