On October 26, 2012, the Philadelphia Post held its 4th Annual Monte Carlo Charity Night. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Travis Manion Foundation whose mission is “to assist our nation's veterans and the families of Fallen Heroes.” This year, through the Travis Manion Foundation, the net proceeds, nearly $9,000, will be donated to a local family who has to endure a future with a family member who became permanently disabled while fighting to protect our freedom.
The event includes food, music, casino table games, food, and raffle prizes for the guests to win that were all donated by generous companies for such a worthy cause.

Approximately 6 percent of U.S. military veterans with limb amputations are classified as bilateral, above-the-knee amputees. Restricted movement of the leg at the knee joint while walking on inclined surfaces or stair cases adds unnecessary strain due to the individual's need to use
his/her upper body to move up and down stair cases.
The Prosthetic Knee-Leg Lift project will build upon the advances already achieved, further refining the design to maximize the prosthesis’ security and comfort, and reduce the weight of the design. A redesign of the device for a bilateral, above-the-knee amputee should focus on making it easier for the user to climb stairs and will enable these individuals to gain access to any location, including work places, regardless of ADA compliance. Click the photo below to see the Cal Poly student project team members. It is the team’s intent that the Prosthetic Knee – Leg Lift Project will be quiet, convenient, and helpful to amputees who want the same mobility that others can achieve.
Donations for the Prosthetic Knee-Leg Lift and the Myoelectric Mouse projects were made to QL+ on March 28, 2012, at the Golden Eagle Dinner; no further donations are being accepted for these projects. However, SAME is accepting donations for the Universal Lift Program. Click here to donate today.

In 2011, the SAME Board of Direction established the Wounded Warrior Initiative to develop a strategy to support wounded warriors and families of fallen warriors. Chaired by Board member This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. of Farnsworth Group Inc., the initiative focused on three key efforts to help wounded warriors through rehabilitation and their transition to the civilian workforce. [Please click on the focus areas below for details on each specific effort.]
Today, SAME is continuing its efforts to support Wounded Warriors. Through efforts at the national, regional and local levels, SAME members are actively working to provide support and service to our wounded warriors and their families.

SAME also is continuing to accept donations to help fund Quality of Life Plus (QL+), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that engineers adaptive technologies to benefit America’s wounded Veterans, first responders and other public servants. By harnessing the creative and engineering skills of students and faculty at Cal Poly, QL+ succeeds in developing innovative solutions that help our nation’s heroes live, work and play. The combination of engineering, mentoring future engineers, and supporting our wounded warriors made a partnership with QL+ an exceptional fit for SAME.
If you would like to donate to SAME and/or QL+ go to www.same.org/donate. You will be able to make a donation using our, secure online donation form, or download the Contribution Form and contribute via mail or Fax.
Additional resources on SAME’s Wounded Warrior Initiative:
Myoelectric stimulation of residual limb(s) as soon and as often as possible after amputation helps retain crucial nerve endings in amputees, allowing for greater control of prostheses fitted at a later date. The Center for the Intrepid in San Antonio, Texas, is a rehabilitation center that uses nerve stimulation control to interface with software games. The medical technology currently in use by occupational therapists and physiotherapists, both there and elsewhere, is limited and outdated in comparison to current market technology.
This QL+ Project will develop a myoelectric control based interface for a standard USB computer mouse. Creating a rehabilitative experience that is engaging and fun will assist in improving the life of the patients. This rehabilitation serves as a precursor to prosthetic options.
