On Oct. 27, 2012, SAME Northern Virginia Post members, along with family and friends, braved hurricane forecasts to assist with the Green Road Project at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.
The Green Road Project is a project conceived by retired Naval neurologist, Capt. Fred Foote, M.D., to convert a wooded area into a recreation and recovery zone for wounded warriors and their family members. The site consists of woods adjoining 3/8 of a mile of stream running through the base. The project will include stream bed restoration, creation of a fully-accessible walking path, garden spaces, a climbing wall, a fishing dock, fire pit, a communal structure with restroom facilities, and a commemorative overlook. When complete, the project will connect two base residential facilities for wounded warriors: Fisher House and Sanctuary Hall.
Upon arrival, Post members were given a walking tour of the site with description of all planned improvements by Dr. Foote and by SAME Northern Virginia Post past president Capt. Jay Manik, USCG (Ret.). The group assisted in clearing debris from the site and disbursing a pair of mulch piles.
