The work done by the members of SAME national committees and councils is key to the success of SAME's overall mission: Connecting military, government and private-sector members of the A/E/C community to promote education and professional development, and to advance business practices, technologies and techniques used in the profession. The committees and councils offer numerous opportunities for a variety of professionally- and personally-rewarding experiences by:

• helping young professionals with business and technical issues;
• keeping SAME members up to date on emerging technologies;
• encouraging international business alliances in the A/E/C industry;
• working to improve industry-government business practices;
• working with high-school and college students to encourage the pursuit of a career in the A/E/C industry; and

K-12 Outreach

SAME members actively provide support on the local level (through SAME Posts) to inspire students in grades K-12 to enter the engineering career field. In addition to the SAME Engineering & Construction Camps, SAME members actively participate in the following events to raise awareness of both the profession and SAME. The West Point Bridge Design Contest is an excellent program designed to interest students in engineering and construction by challenging them to design a virtual bridge. A sample PowerPoint will help you get your students/school started. Project and information. [PDF]

SAME proudly supports Mathcounts, a national competition promoting mathematic achievement at the "middle school" level. Students participate in exciting events that challenge students' math skills, develop self-confidence and reward achievement. The program has more than 17,000 volunteers who participate annually. Mathcounts has received two White House Citations as an outstanding private sector initiative.

SAME encourages all Posts to work with local Boy Scout Troops to provide training and leadership for merit badges on Architecture and Engineering. The Boy Scouts Merit Badge program currently offers more than 100 badges. To get involved in this program, please contact your local Post.

The Society of Women Engineers has initiated an Engieering Patch for Girl Scouts age 9-14. The Engineering Patch program provides an opportunity for girls to earn a special engineering patch by exploring seven different engineering activities: programming robots, drawing views, making rubber items, building bridges, using a CAD program, making planes and rockets and exploring engineering careers. The National Engineers Week Future City Competition provides an educational engineering program for seventh- and eighth-grade students that combines a stimulating and fun challenge with hands-on applications for students to present their vision of the city of the future.
