San Antonio Post Supports Water For People

More than 1 billion people worldwide don’t have access to safe water, and more than 2 billion don’t have access to adequate sanitation. Water For People is an international non-governmental organization that is working to address these problems, and the SAME San Antonio Post last year began supporting the organization’s efforts.

The San Antonio chapter of the Texas Section of Water For People held its second annual golf tournament on Aug. 27, 2010. Patrice Melancon, the Texas Section Water For People Co-Chair and SAME San Antonio Post Secretary, announced the tournament during a local Post meeting. In addition to several local Post members participating in the tournament, the San Antonio Post made a $500 donation to Water For People that the Post intends to make annually. The golf tournament was a huge success, raising about $15,000 dollars and attracting more than 100 participants.

Lt. Gen. Carl Strock, USA (Ret.), former SAME President and current President of Bechtel Construction Operations, said, "I am pleased to see this initiative. It is not only generous; it also serves military engineers in two important ways. First, it reduces the likelihood that we will be put in harm's way by reducing the likelihood of conflict. Lack of access to safe drinking water and sanitation contributes to the loss of hope and sense of despair that often lead to violence. Second, a better understanding of the role of water in conflict and how to provide it will enhance our effectiveness when we are called. The war for the hearts and minds of people is all about satisfying their basic human need for a healthy and secure environment. As builders and fighters we play a major role in that. I urge all Posts to follow San Antonio's example by supporting organizations like Water For People."
