On Feb. 18, San Antonio Post President Steve Houser, Board Director Patrice Melancon, K-12 Outreach Coordinator David Pratt and Special Projects Coordinator Jim Clary met with the Bonham Elementary School principal, several teachers and the 60 fifth-grade students who the Post is sponsoring to attend a one-and-a-half-day camp at the Bamberger Ranch near Blanco, Texas. Last fall, the San Antonio Post board approved spending $3,000 to sponsor the 60 students to the camp.
Bonham Elementary School is a San Antonio Independent School District charter school located south of downtown San Antonio. The charter focus of the school is: dual language/languages, science and fine arts. Post representatives learned that the fifth-graders have gone to the Bamberger Ranch camp for the past six years. However, because of budget shortfalls, the students would not have been able to attend the camp this year without the San Antonio Post’s support.
The students will be divided into two groups of 30, with one group attending the camp on February 24-25, and the second group attending March 10-11. This year’s group is excited about going, and the students, teachers and principal are very appreciative of the Post’s support. The Post representatives talked some about SAME, but mostly they fielded the students’ questions and felt their excitement about the camp.
