The Charleston Post held its annual Industry Day on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the Charleston Area Convention Center in North Charleston, S.C.
With over 200 present, the Post welcomed Dr. Robert D. Wolff, PE, F.SAME Executive Director, as a guest of honor. The lunch speaker, Dr. Jason Hallstrom from Clemson University, intrigued the audience with his highly interactive presentation of the Intelligent River Project. Clemson University has deployed sensors and corresponding system software for the Intelligent River Project along the Savannah River in upstate South Carolina. Researchers are monitoring 120 miles of river with wireless sensor motes that monitor a wide variety of parameters associated with water quality, pollution and environmental impacts.
The Industry Day featured Technical Breakout Sessions held by representatives from the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast, Ft. Bragg, and United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Charleston. The Young Member Event followed the sessions, which included a Toastmasters Presentation on Public Speaking.
New this year, over 100 members attended the Industry Day Icebreaker at the North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum. The museum is dedicated to preserving the history and evolution of the fire service. Guests enjoyed interactive exhibits featuring real smoke, hands on displays, a theater, children’s play area and fire truck simulator. The Museum proved to be a remarkable venue for the Icebreaker.
