Emerging Leaders Alliance Criteria (ELA) Selection Information

For the second year, SAME is offering the opportunity for eight Young Members (39 and under) to attend the 2013 Emerging Leaders Alliance (ELA) Conference taking place November 11-13 in Reston, VA). The ELA Conference is a three-day multi-disciplinary leadership training conference for select professionals in the engineering, research, and science industry, promoting the development of great leaders to guide our professions in addressing the needs of people in the 21st century. (www.emergingleadersalliance.org) Registration fees and 3 nights in the conference hotel will be covered for those who are accepted into the program and sponsored by the Academy of Fellows; other travel expenses will need to be covered by the attendee’s command or firm, or by their local Post. Others may apply directly to ELA and pay a registration fee. SAME will pay for lodging directly and will reimburse the airfare following the workshop. Advance approval is required for any airfare greater than $500.00.

Each Region may submit one eligible Young Member for consideration. RVPs will solicit applications from Post Presidents, and shall select one applicant per region. Applications must be submitted by RVPs to SAME HQ no later than July 15, 2013, using the online form at http://www.same.org/stipends.

  1. Young Member (Civilian or Military) who is 39 or under as of July 15, 2013.
  2. A Join Date before January 1, 2012 [Note: Stipend recipients are expected to have at least 18 months of membership in SAME prior to being awarded a stipend]
  3. Active member of an SAME Post, Field Chapter or National Committee or Council for the past year (as reflected in the nomination form).
  4. A letter of endorsement from the Post President or Committee or Council Chair supporting the award of a stipend.
  5. Applicants who are sponsored by SAME are not eligible to be sponsored more than once for this Leadership Program.
  6. Before accepting the sponsorship, nominees must obtain approval from their supervisor and Federal employees (military and civil service) should seek the advice from their local ethics counselor regarding the acceptance of the stipend.

Applications for sponsorship will be awarded based on favorable review of the application materials by the Academy of Fellows Mentoring Committee. All applications must be submitted online at www.same.org/stipends no later than July 15, 2013, to be considered.

Post Small Business Liaison Officer Award

Nominations for the 2012 PSBLO Award must be submitted by Monday, April 22, 2013, using the online nomination form at www.same.org/PSBLOnomination.

Post Small Business Liaison Officer Award
The annual Post Small Business Liaison Officer (PSBLO) of the Year Award recognizes the PSBLO whose leadership, support and activities best exemplifies the mission of the Small Business Council.

Eligibility: member of a Post Board of Direction as the named PSBLO or Post Officer to be eligible.

Nomination Criteria:
Eminent and notable contributions to small business. The PSBLO Award is based on achieving specific criteria segmented into three focus areas: SAME Post Participation, Small Business Council Participation, and Small Business Advocacy Outside SAME. A minimum of five of the nine criteria factors noted below must be met to qualify for the award.

SAME Post Participation:

  • Implemented Innovative membership recruiting of small businesses.
  • Advocates providing discounts to small businesses for Post or Regional Events.
  • Recognized a small business member or firm via newsletter, newspaper, magazine award, monthly Post meeting.
  • Received Letter(s) of appreciation/commendation from their Post President, a local or national organization or agency for post efforts in small business activity.

Small Business Council Participation:

  • Member of the Small Business Council and have contributed to Conferences, Newsletters, small business Training, Webinars.
  • Attended SAME Small Business Conferences in the past two years and can offer insight on improving the programs.

Small Business Advocacy Outside SAME:

  • Works for a small business
  • Coordinated or assisted a small business event with a Local Government Agency.
  • Assist with conference planning of at least one (1) community small business outreach event.

Nomination Process: May be self-nominated or nominated by a Society member. The nominator will verify that the individual meets the eligibility criteria for the award, and that the nomination package provides information to support each of the nomination criteria and all required information on the nominee. The nominator is responsible for ensuring the package, with endorsement, is received at SAME HQ on or before the application deadline.
