President's News Spring 2020

Greetings All – Across the globe, we are living through the COVID-19 Pandemic, and experiencing things we have never been through before.  In Massachusetts, home of our Society of American Military Engineers Boston Post, at the time of this writing we have stay-at-home advisories, closure of non-essential businesses, closures of schools, and severe stresses on the capacity of our health institutions and health professionals.  These stresses challenge the way we live and work as never before, and how we, as the SAME Boston Post, function.  I would like to share how this has changed how we are operating for the near term, but also how this has further reinforced our core missions.

Spring Meeting, Programs and Networking Events

Our Programs Chair, Pete Long, and our Emergency Preparedness and Infrastructure Resiliency Chair, Bob Dunn and committee members organized our joint meeting with Construction Management Association of America in early March.  This was an excellent event focused on Resiliency, and I welcome you to read more about our event and featured speakers in the Bugle.  This was the last scheduled in-person event for our Boston Post until the restriction on large gathering set by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are schooled to be lifted.

Deb Beck, our Spring Meeting chair, and her committee worked quickly to reschedule our annual scholarship awards and networking event to Tuesday, September 8, 2020.  We are hopeful that as the first Tuesday after Labor Day we will be able to be together again face-to-face and we look forward to hosting the first event of the fall season!  I welcome you to visit our website and sign up (https://www.same.org/boston)

Led by our Golf Chair, Jon Abplanalp, our SAME Boston Post Golf events are always vital for both networking and fundraising for our scholarship and outreach programs.  At the time of this writing, Jon and his committee are looking into what will be best for SAME Golf, and he will share any updates on our SAME Boston Post Website.  Stay tuned – these are always great events!

Scholarship and Outreach

Led by our Post Vice President, Jeff Dulgarian, scholarship and outreach committees are the heart and soul of our STEM efforts, and our “give back” to students who will be the future of our Country and our SAME Boston Post.  Even during this pandemic, we are continuing with both of these programs, recognizing that the financial needs of many students and families are strained.  My heartfelt thanks to both of these committees and the numerous volunteers who work throughout the year with students and faculty.

Boston Post Financial Health - Supporting our missions

Our Post has also been closely monitoring our financial health, through the strong leadership of our Post Treasurer, John Gerstenlauer.   John’s advice and guidance during these times have allowed us to make decisions that balance our core missions with our financial health.

Voting during a pandemic – our new slate of Boston Post Officers

It is my great pleasure to announce our 2020-2021 slate of officers for the Society of American Military Engineers Boston Post (please see this issue of the Bugle!)  I would like to thank our Nominations Committee for all their thoughtful work pulling together this year’s slate. Congratulations to incoming President, Jeff Dulgarian and his excellent officers and committee chairs!

My appreciation goes out to Dawn Dearborn, Nominations Chair, as well as fellow Nominations Committee members Chris Kuppens, Mark Anderson, Sheila Warren and Christen Sardano.

Post Communications and Administration

Lastly, during this time of stay-at-home advisories and closures of non-essential businesses, our Post Communications and Membership committees have been working overtime!  Our Chair, Mykel Mendes, and key committee members Kimberly Ewalt, Sheila Warren, Jutta Hager and Membership Chair, Christina Camerota have all kept us connected via our website and our Bugle newsletter!

As my year of service as Post President draws to a close next month, I wanted to say it has been a privilege to work with all of you!  I want to thank all of our sustaining members, and the large number of volunteer board members, committee chairs and members for creating and sustaining a vibrant Boston Post.  I hope that you and your loved ones are able to stay safe and healthy during this challenging time, and I look forward to coming together on the other side as a vibrant professional society.

Many Thanks,

Lisa Brandon

Happy New Year!

Greetings SAME Boston Post members – and Happy New Year!

I welcome you to follow our future Programs and Young Member events on our Website (https://www.same.org/boston) and read about our most recent meetings and presentations in this issue of the Bugle.

On January 14, 2020, we start the year off with a “supercharged” evening hosted jointly by our SAME Boston Post Young Member Committee and a local environmental professional society, the LSP Association. Sustaining member firm Heritage Environmental Services is the event sponsor, and we are so appreciative of their support! President's News Oct. 2019
Greetings SAME Boston Post members – and Happy Fall 2019!

We have kicked off this season with some great Programs to share knowledge related to engineering, environmental and construction projects in New England.    Follow our future Programs and Young Member events on our Website (HERE) and read about our most recent meetings and presentations in this issue of the Bugle.

In September, John Wyeth from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard shared the plans and future expansions related to the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program.   Of interest to all of our membership is the need to for the US Navy to develop and implement plans to address and monitor its infrastructure investments in New England and across the country. In this naval spirit, on October 17, 2019, the Boston, Piscataqua and Narragansett SAME Posts in New England are jointly hosting our first New England Celebration of the centennial celebration for the Society of American Military Engineers at the USS Constitution!  Please join our exciting event, which will include tours of the USS Constitution on the waterfront in downtown Boston.   The day will include updates and briefings from the three Federal entities that are present at this historic site:  the Navy, the Coast Guard and the National Park Service.

During this same Columbus Day week, on October 15, 2019 we will be hosting our SAME Boston Post Golf Event, complete with “golf with a pro” the week before for those member who would like to sharpen their golf skills.  Sign‐ups for all of these exciting networking and STEM fundraising events can be found on our website. Greetings from Post President Lisa Brandon

Greetings SAME Boston Post members – and happy 4th of July!  It is a great time to celebrate the birthday of our country, and also to kick off our centennial celebration for the Society of American Military Engineers!  I am honored to serve as the Boston Post President, and look forward to helping to Celebrating our 100th Anniversary in our Run to 2020 for SAME!  We have many exciting events in the planning stage for this year, and I welcome you to keep up with announcements on our SAME Boston Post website and our Post email updates.

I want to thank Dawn Dearborn – our outgoing Post President – for all of her contributions to the Post!  She has done a great job this past year, and her focus on building up our resiliency program in particular has been excellent.  Under her leadership, our Boston Post was awarded many streamers from SAME National, including 3 with Distinction!  Dawn did all this while also busy running her own firm as President of Tantara, plus juggling many of life’s incoming adventures.  I also want to thank Dawn for mentoring me personally over the past many years as I have succeeded her on all the many committees that she has chaired.  Thank you Dawn!

In keeping with the 2020 SAME Vision Statement, our Boston Post will strive this year to continue to be recognized as the multi-disciplined integrator of military, private, and academic national infrastructure-related capabilities to produce viable solutions for American’s national security.  Our Committee Chairs have already begun working on excellent Programs for this year that align with this vision; enhanced STEM out-reach activities; and a wide variety of networking and business development opportunities that our membership values.

I want to thank all of our Sustaining Members, and the large number of volunteer Committee Chairs and members for creating and sustaining a vibrant Boston Post for SAME.  Come join us for our exciting events this year!
