President's news

President's News Spring 2020

Greetings All – Across the globe, we are living through the COVID-19 Pandemic, and experiencing things we have never been through before.  In Massachusetts, home of our Society of American Military Engineers Boston Post, at the time of this writing we have stay-at-home advisories, closure of non-essential businesses, closures of schools, and severe stresses on the capacity of our health institutions and health professionals.  These stresses challenge the way we live and work as never before, and how we, as the SAME Boston Post, function.  I would like to share how this has changed how we are operating for the near term, but also how this has further reinforced our core missions.

Spring Meeting, Programs and Networking Events

Our Programs Chair, Pete Long, and our Emergency Preparedness and Infrastructure Resiliency Chair, Bob Dunn and committee members organized our joint meeting with Construction Management Association of America in early March.  This was an excellent event focused on Resiliency, and I welcome you to read more about our event and featured speakers in the Bugle.  This was the last scheduled in-person event for our Boston Post until the restriction on large gathering set by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are schooled to be lifted.

Deb Beck, our Spring Meeting chair, and her committee worked quickly to reschedule our annual scholarship awards and networking event to Tuesday, September 8, 2020.  We are hopeful that as the first Tuesday after Labor Day we will be able to be together again face-to-face and we look forward to hosting the first event of the fall season!  I welcome you to visit our website and sign up (https://www.same.org/boston)

Led by our Golf Chair, Jon Abplanalp, our SAME Boston Post Golf events are always vital for both networking and fundraising for our scholarship and outreach programs.  At the time of this writing, Jon and his committee are looking into what will be best for SAME Golf, and he will share any updates on our SAME Boston Post Website.  Stay tuned – these are always great events!

Scholarship and Outreach

Led by our Post Vice President, Jeff Dulgarian, scholarship and outreach committees are the heart and soul of our STEM efforts, and our “give back” to students who will be the future of our Country and our SAME Boston Post.  Even during this pandemic, we are continuing with both of these programs, recognizing that the financial needs of many students and families are strained.  My heartfelt thanks to both of these committees and the numerous volunteers who work throughout the year with students and faculty.

Boston Post Financial Health - Supporting our missions

Our Post has also been closely monitoring our financial health, through the strong leadership of our Post Treasurer, John Gerstenlauer.   John’s advice and guidance during these times have allowed us to make decisions that balance our core missions with our financial health.

Voting during a pandemic – our new slate of Boston Post Officers

It is my great pleasure to announce our 2020-2021 slate of officers for the Society of American Military Engineers Boston Post (please see this issue of the Bugle!)  I would like to thank our Nominations Committee for all their thoughtful work pulling together this year’s slate. Congratulations to incoming President, Jeff Dulgarian and his excellent officers and committee chairs!

My appreciation goes out to Dawn Dearborn, Nominations Chair, as well as fellow Nominations Committee members Chris Kuppens, Mark Anderson, Sheila Warren and Christen Sardano.

Post Communications and Administration

Lastly, during this time of stay-at-home advisories and closures of non-essential businesses, our Post Communications and Membership committees have been working overtime!  Our Chair, Mykel Mendes, and key committee members Kimberly Ewalt, Sheila Warren, Jutta Hager and Membership Chair, Christina Camerota have all kept us connected via our website and our Bugle newsletter!

As my year of service as Post President draws to a close next month, I wanted to say it has been a privilege to work with all of you!  I want to thank all of our sustaining members, and the large number of volunteer board members, committee chairs and members for creating and sustaining a vibrant Boston Post.  I hope that you and your loved ones are able to stay safe and healthy during this challenging time, and I look forward to coming together on the other side as a vibrant professional society.

Many Thanks,

Lisa Brandon
