Gem State Post 2022 Scholarship Offer

Two (2) $2,000.00 Scholarship

REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicant must be a US Citizen
  • Enrolled in an engineering program, architecture program, or one of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs listed below leading to a BS degree or equivalent.
  • AND Undergraduate class standing of sophomore, junior or first semester senior
  • AND Attending The University of Idaho, Idaho State University, Boise State University, BYU Idaho, or Northwest Nazarene University
  • OR A son or daughter of a SAME Gem State Post member having undergraduate class standing of sophomore, junior or first semester senior enrolled in an engineering program or one of the programs listed below leading to a BS degree or equivalent at any accredited university
  • Applications are due no later than January 21, 2022

SELECTION BASED ON

  • Academic standing - GPA
  • Response to Scholarship Essay
  • Involvement in university and community programs
  • Letter of Recommendation from a University Professor or Official

AWARDS

  • Two (2) $2,000 scholarships
  • Student membership in the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME)
  • Military Engineering Familiarization at Mountain Home Air Force Base or Military Base adjacent to your school or home (accommodations paid for)

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applications will be submitted via email only to Timothy Wood. A full application must include

  • Statement of extra-curricular activities from applicant. Include the following
    • School Activities
    • Volunteer Activities
  • Letter of recommendation from a University Official in the engineering/ architecture /or STEM department where the student’s major is located
  • The letter of recommendation must be signed by the person making the recommendation
  • Copy of an official transcript—will be required before scholarship award. For initial application submission an unofficial copy of the transcript is acceptable
  • Scholarship Essay – select a topic from the options below
  • Provide a permanent email address
  • Provide a permanent mailing address
  • Provide your student Identification Number associated with your Bursar Account

SAME Scholarship Essay

Provide a typewritten or word processed essay, 12-point font maximum of four pages on the following topic:

Provide an essay addressing one of the following topics:

  • Describe what you believe America’s Energy Policy should be when it comes to renewable energy, fossil fuel energy, and energy generated using dams
  • Engineering and STEM innovation in the US military
  • How does America get more students to enegage in STEM Education

Choose one of the topics above and complete an essay based upon the guidance below.

America’s Energy Policy

As renewable energy has become more available, what should America’s energy policy be as it relates to a mixture of renewable energy, fossil fuel generation and energy generated from dams? What role does nuclear energy have? Why have you selected this energy policy? What should the mixture of different energy types be? How does the cost of energy affect your view of energy policy? What is the impact of 100% renewable energy on the electrical grid?

Engineering and STEM innovation in the US military

As the US military prepares for the next conflict, what engineering or STEM innovations can be leveraged to keep our military on the cutting edge? What can the military do to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, or should they? What innovative methods, such as 3D printing, can be used for expedient facilities for housing military troops or aiding in a huminatarian crisis? What STEM areas will create the next weapon system or counter our adversaires’ weapons systems?

STEM Education

America is pushing for more students to enter STEM education. As a student currently involved in STEM education, what do you believe America should do to get more students engagedin STEM education? What programs do you see as viable? If you were designing a program to encourage students to pursue STEM education, how would you do it? What does our education system do correctly to encourage participation in STEM education
