In 2016 the Houston/Galveston Post has $10,000.00 available annually for college and high school scholarships.
All Sustaining Members are encouraged to make a contribution to the Scholarship Fund. Contributions from other Companies and Individuals are also very much welcome.

College Scholarships

The Houston/Galveston Post awards $2,000.00 scholarships to college students that are dependents of Houston/Galveston Post members or members of the Texas A&M Student Chapter.
Scholarships are awarded based on a point system taking into account items such as class ranking, major, GPA, ROTC participation and other considerations.
Winners are presented scholarship checks at our July monthly luncheon meeting, usually the 3rd Wednesday, each year.

High School Scholarships

The Houston/Galveston Post awards $1,000.00 scholarships to graduating high school students that are entering college as freshmen the following fall.
Scholarships are awarded based on a point system taking into account items such as major, grades, ROTC participation and other considerations.
Winners are presented scholarship checks at our July monthly luncheon meeting, usually the 3rd Wednesday, each year.

Engineering & Construction Camps

The Houston/Galveston Post annually supports the SAME Engineering & Construction camps which are now held in four locations in June and July each year. The locations and dates for 2016 are:

  • US Army, Vicksburg, MS (June 12-18, 2016), Application deadline to H/G Post: March 1, 2016
  • US Air Force, Air Force Academy (July 7-13), Application deadline to H/G Post: April 1, 2016
  • US Marine, Camp Lejune, NC (June 19-25), Application due to H/G Post: April 1,2016
  • US Navy, Port Hueneme, CA (No Comp in 2016)

These camps are for High School students who excel in math, science and technical courses and are interested in pursuing engineering in college. These one-week camps are high energy, hands-on events for students from across the country and around the world. The camps are led by a professional staff of engineers from both private industry and the military services.

The Houston/Galveston Post pays ½ the camp registration and the travel expenses for the primary student attending each camp. If additional students are selected the post will pay for the travel expenses.These are highly competitive selections and only the best are selected by the national selection panel to attend.

 

Scholarship Selection Criteria

 In order to promote the interests of the Houston/Galveston Post of the Society of American Military Engineers and in support of its dedication to the national defense, scholarship(s) are awarded annually to selected applicant(s). We have up to$10,000.00 annually available for scholarships: $2,000.00 scholarships are planned to be awarded to full time college students having completed one year of college or members working full time while attending college and $1,000.00 scholarships are planned to be awarded to entering college freshmen.

ELIGIBILITY:The applicants may be a working part time student or a full time student in an accredited college or university who:

  • Is a SAME Member and Houston/Galveston Post Member: sustaining, individual or student
  • Is a SAME Member and member of the Texas A&M Chapter,student member of the Houston/Galveston Post, or student member of another TEXOMA Post that honors Houston/Galveston Post student members for their scholarships

By restricting eligibility as above, our scholarships are made available to those members who are working and enrolled to gain a degree in the listed curriculum or full time students who have an association with the Houston/Galveston Post or other TEXOMA Post that supports our students. Applicants will compete in three categories:

  1. Working students
  2. Full time students
  3. Entering college freshmen

All scholarships will be awarded on merit.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Merit

  • Candidate is participating in an R.O.T.C. Program
  • He/she is enrolled in an Engineering/Architectural/Computer Science/Science/Construction Technology Curriculum
  • His/her cumulative GPA (High School GPA for entering college freshman)
  • He/she is a student member or dependent/grandchild or great-grandchild of a post member
  • Preference to seniority (Senior-4,Juniors-3,Sophomore-2,Freshman-1)
  • Discussion Paper

DISCUSSION PAPER:

This document will be a key element in the scholarship selection criteria. Topics should include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Employment experience
  • Activities/elected positions
  • Career goals
  • Honors/Awards
  • Personal information
  • Why are you seeking this scholarship

Scholarship Application 2016

Deadline for submitting application form and all supporting data is June 3, 2016. Scholarships will be presented at the July 20, 2016 luncheon.
