Post President's Message
I am honored to be the 2017 President of the Washington DC Post.
Thank you for this opportunity to serve our membership and bring a private industry perspective to our Post. I am Susan Merrigan, Senior Marketing Manager at SOM, and I have been marketing architectural and engineering services for 20 years and a member of the Society for the last 17. I was recruited to the board in 2000 before I even knew what SAME was, and subsequently served in many of the functional roles on the Board of Directors - along with several of my industry peers – while developing long standing friendships, business relationships, and a true appreciation for the mission of SAME.
Over the last nine years, we have lost a good number of experienced marketers – and their federal expertise – as sequestration and the recession reduced opportunities in our industry. We are still trying to recover, and like all other disciplines, are experiencing a shortage in skilled professionals. With the resurgence in federal and infrastructure projects, we need to recruit and train a new generation of professional services marketers.
My goal this year is to extend our reach within our membership to rebuild the marketing talent pool and enhance our technical members’ business development skills so our industry can successfully pursue infrastructure projects and win new federal work, which aligns with the Society’s mission and 2020 Strategic Plan. As we continue to build and strengthen the DC Post’s Educational, Leadership and Mentoring programs, I would like to ask for volunteers to help me create programming for our membership, such as federal proposal training, LEED accreditation opportunities, and mentoring. We have partnerships in place with SMPS and CMAA; and I would also like to pursue a relationship with USGBC. Capitalizing on these partnerships, we can develop these programs that will bring further value to our membership.
I am passionate about the AEC industry, and helping leverage our individual expertise to grow the Society and its contributions to the nation. Thank you for supporting our Post and I look forward to serving you this year.
Susan Merrigan was elected as the Washington, DC Post’s President in January 2017. She currently serves as Senior Marketing Manager at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM). She has over 20 years of experience working in the AEC industry with specific expertise in the Federal market.
A California native, Susan received both a BA in Communications, Law, Economics, and Government (CLEG) and an MA in Public Communications from American University, as well as an MBA from the University of Florida.
The Washington, DC Post looks forward to flourishing under her leadership over the next year.
