1,4-Dioxane has been described as “the emerging contaminant that keeps on emerging”.  Since 2001, when analytical detection limits dropped from 100 ug/L to 1 ug/L, 1,4-dioxane has been detected at many sites where the presence of this common solvent stabilizer was previously unknown.  The revelation of 1,4-dioxane’s widespread occurrence at solvent release sites where 1,1,1-trichloroethane was used, and its occurrence at a wide variety of other sites, has attracted the attention of both the regulatory and regulated communities. There has been a steady growth in technical publications regarding 1,4-dioxane remediation solutions in both peer-reviewed journals and ESTCP, SERDP, and AWRF. Drinking water sampling results from the 3rd Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Requirements show that 1,4-dioxane is present in >6% of the US supply above 0.07 ug/L,. which suggests that there remain many 1,4-dioxane release sites as yet uninvestigated or unmitigated, and the demand for skills and services to address 1,4-dioxane is growing.
