SAME Industry-Government Engagement (IGE): Building Cybersecurity
Industry-Government Engagement (IGE) has been the core tenet of SAME since the Society was founded 100 years ago. Now more than ever, our public and private sectors must come together to fight many different kinds of threats with short and long-term economic and national security implications. Of utmost importance to our industry and our national security at this moment is building cybersecurity as it impacts human safety. The World Economic Forum cites cyber attacks as the second top global business risk. As we have recently seen with the Colonial Pipeline and the meat packing industry, our power grids, gas lines, water systems, facilities and homes are at risk. Ransomware and other cyber attacks can directly threaten lives and property in all aspects of society if targeted to the smart technologies we rely on for essential services. Please read a short white paper on the topic, written by Lucian Niemeyer, former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy, Installations, and Environment. Currently, Lucian is the CEO of the non-profit, Building Cybersecurity.
In conjunction with the Northern Virginia (NOVA) and Washington D.C. Posts, SAME is hosting a series of engagements to identify parameters of this effort, leverage expertise both internally and externally, raise SAME member awareness, and publish guidance on improving the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) for the federal government and other specifications for public infrastructure. All events require separate registration.
