2019 Phoenix Post Scholarship Information

The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), Phoenix Post intends to award ONE scholarship valued at $1,500 to a student pursuing a college degree in one of the science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) fields prior to the end of calendar year 2019.

Applicants must be enrolled, or planning to enroll, in a full-time undergraduate degree program in one of the STEM disciplines at an accredited college or university in the spring or fall terms of 2020. Applicants who have earned an undergraduate degree or who are enrolled in a graduate degree program are not eligible. All applicants must also have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 basis) to be eligible to apply. The minimum GPA requirement applies to both high school and college students. No scholarship will be awarded for those pursuing an associate, second undergraduate or graduate school degree. Applicants who receive an appointment to one of the U.S. Military Academies (or affiliated preparatory schools) or are awarded a full scholarship at any accredited U.S. post-secondary institution of higher education are not eligible to receive funds from this program. A full scholarship is usually defined as one that provides for payment of tuition, books, lab fees, and other related expenses. An ROTC scholarship is considered a full scholarship.

Preference will also be given for candidates who are interested in pursuing a military career or has at least one family member (sibling, parent, or grandparent) who is either:

(1) An active SAME member
(2) A current member of the U.S. military, or
(3) Retired from the U.S. military.

Applicants must be high school seniors currently enrolled in the 2019 school year or are expecting to enroll in college for the 2020 school year or returning college sophomores, juniors, or seniors enrolled in a college or university for the next academic year.

Further, our intent is to target this scholarship award to a Phoenix Post area high school or college student (primary address in greater Phoenix area, the college does not need to be in AZ). The Post reserves the right to offer scholarships to any qualified candidate.

Submission Deadline is November 30, 2019.

Scholarship award recipient would be notified by December 11th, 2019, and a formal announcement would be made at the SAME Phoenix Post Holiday Luncheon, currently planned for December 12th, 2019.

The Society of American Military Engineers is the only nonprofit professional engineering education organization that actively promotes the advancement of both individual technical knowledge and the collective engineering capabilities of governments, the uniformed services and private industry.

Our goal is to unite public and private sector entities and individuals in the A/E/C fields so that we can prepare for and overcome natural and man made disasters, acts of terrorism and improve security at home and abroad.

The Phoenix Post accomplishes this goal locally by supporting monthly luncheon meetings and other professional/social activities attended by members of local government, military, private industry, students and other interested parties. These meetings are announced via our e-mail distribution list and quarterly newsletter. We are supported by the national Society of American Military Engineers and publications such as The Military Engineer, which also promotes the interests and goals of our society and its members. Please peruse our website to discover the benefits of SAME Phoenix Post membership.
