National Cemetery of the Alleghenies -- Memorial Day Volunteer Activities
National Cemetery of the Alleghenies -- Memorial Day Volunteer Activities

Due to the projected rain on Friday, we just received word that the Cemetery plans to raise the flags Thursday May 27 at 12:30, meeting at Shelter No. 1.

National Cemetery of the Alleghenies will need assistance lowering and raising the flags.  We will meet at Shelter 2 on Friday, May 28th at 12:30 PM to raise the flags in preparation for Memorial Day Weekend.  This typically takes about an hour.

We will be bringing the flags down the following Tuesday, June 1st (or Wednesday June 2nd - depending on the weather; it is undesirable to take the flags down and attempt to store them if they are wet).

For this May, the request for volunteers will be limited to the flag raising/lowering (i.e., no headstone cleaning and/or other activities).  Hopefully, we will begin to have that opportunity again in the fall!

If interested please feel free to contact us: PittsburghPost@gmail.com.

Congratulations 2020 Award Winners
Congratulations 2020 Award Winners

SAME Pittsburgh Post presented annual awards at the December 2020 virtual monthly meeting. Thank you for nominating your colleagues for their contributions, and congratulations to our two award recipients!

2020 Professional of the Year - Julie Barg, P.E., Director of Environmental Services, Advantus Engineers

The Professional of the Year Award is presented to recognize an individual SAME member for outstanding contributions toward the improvement of the social, economic, and professional status of himself/herself and their respective profession. The individual shall have demonstrated experience consistent with the SAME mission.

2020 Young Professional of the Year - Rachael Richter, AICP, LEED GA, Department Manager - Planning, Michael Baker International

The Young Professional of the Year Award identifies and recognizes an outstanding SAME member (engineer or scientist) no older than 39 at the time of application. The evaluation criteria include academic achievements, professional and technical society activities (with specific SAME involvement), engineering/scientific experience, publications or patents, major engineering/scientific project achievements, and additional activities such as civic, fraternal, or humanitarian endeavors.

National Cemetery of the Alleghenies - Flag Raising/Lowering

The Director at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies confirmed they will be raising the flags along the Avenue of Heroes, and thus are requesting volunteers for assistance.

  • The flags will be raised on Monday 11/9 starting at 12:30.  Volunteers can meet at Shelter No. 2 (same place as usual).  Raising of the flags is usually completed in under an hour.
  • The flags will come down on Thursday 11/12, or Friday 11/13, depending upon weather.  The Director will make that determination when we raise the flags depending upon the forecast.  We typically have less volunteers for this, so if you cannot make the flag raising but would like to help, this may be an opportunity.  Lowering the flags typically takes a bit longer.

Social distance will be practiced (you will need to wear a mask).

There will be no cleaning of the headstones or other duty at this time.  If interested, please email Robert Yauger ryauger@GFNET.com

SAME and Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair 2021 Announcement

SAME has supported the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair with donations and volunteers yearly as part of our STEM activities.  This upcoming year the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held virtually.  They need volunteers for the Scientific Review Committee who will review research plans and paperwork prior to the fair, evaluate the project idea for safety and compliance with the rules, and give feedback related to changes which need to be made to the project or experimental design before it can be submitted for competition.  This is done virtually starting in November for pre-approval projects through just before the fair.

Contact Nicki Wood (412-237-1534, WoodN@CarnegieScienceCenter.Org) to become a member of the Scientific Review Committee and let Deb Chiaraluna (Pittsburgh Post STEM committee chair, Deb.Chiaraluna@testamericainc.com) know you are volunteered.
