STEM Engineering & Construction Camps
SAME, in collaboration with the military services, offers a series of week long, STEM Engineering & Construction (E&C) Camps designed for High School students who excel in math, science and technology courses and are interested in pursuing engineering, architecture, or related fields in college. Each camp has a unique curriculum, with the common threads being: challenging environment, all activities are hands-on, young engineer mentors assigned to the teams and providing long term resources for alumni.

We're so excited to have Kevin Page, the Executive Director of the HR Transportation Accountability Commission, speak to us about the HRTAC Update. Kevin is a multimodal transportation leader experienced in public contracted highway, transit, and rail construction and operations with success in proposing and implementing realistic short and long‐range plans and executing initiatives in order to effectuate positive change.
Kevin will explain how the Commission has successfully planned for, financed, and advanced to $1.4 billion construction in Hampton Roads Region which has funded interstate highway expansion projects with VDOT that set an unprecedented fast pace to deliver its first project by December 2017 followed by the completion of over $5.0 billion in road, bridge, and tunnel projects by 2040.
Phil Kresge discussed how Previous Concrete Pavement can be one of the best solutions for reducing storm-water runoff, as well as one of the most recommended non-manufactured BMPs available today. He talked about what pervious concrete pavement is, its engineering properties, its construction techniques, specification guidance, acceptance testing, and maintenance & operations guides. As Senior Vice President of NRMCA’s Local Paving Division, Phil works with state, regional and local promotion partners to help deliver concrete parking and street paving projects by supporting promotion, design and construction activities. He continues to work closely with the US EPA, GSA, Army Corps of Engineers and Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), as well as numerous commercial accounts and their consultants. Phil is well-versed in design and construction of conventional concrete pavement, pervious concrete, roller-compacted concrete and concrete overlays of existing asphalt pavement.

VMI Student Chapter
We had a tremendous turn out at VMI's Student Chapter meeting!! It was very informative and 62 cadets are interested in learning more about SAME and what we offer. During our SAME meeting with the students, Jamie Weist, PE (with Kimley-Horn and VMI alum) discussed the benefits of SAME to the students, helped them register for SAME, and elected their officers. This meeting, they had officers from each branch of the military (Army, Navy, Air Force) give presentations on what it means to be an officer and engineer. Following the presentations, they enjoyed pizza and networking with the cadets.
RADM Ann Phillips, USN (Ret) spoke to us about sea level rise and its impact on military installations in Hampton Roads. Admiral Phillips has extensive experience while on active duty and since retiring from the Navy on the impacts of sea level rise. She also chaired the Infrastructure Working Group for the Hampton Roads Sea Level Rise Preparedness and Resilience Intergovernmental Pilot Planning Project convened by ODU. Mr. Travis Willer, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron Community Planner, also gave a presentation on what Langley AFB is doing to mitigate the impacts of flooding on base.
