We are excited to invite you on a walking tour of the new $22 million Fuel Pier at Langley AFB. As needed, typically every 2 or 3 weeks, a tug boat brings a barge containing an average of 16,000 barrels of jet fuel. Mechanical arms lower onto the barge and the fuel is pumped to the base jet fuel tank farm. Besides environmental and safety concerns of being in and over the water, the project involved special marine equipment with limited height, due to the nearby runway.
If all goes to plan, we’ll meet at the Langley Club at 11:30 for lunch. Then at 12:00, we'll have the regular meeting activities, and then possibly a Sustaining Member presentation. After a short presentation of the history and background of the project, we'll go to the Pier to explore, weather permitting. Walking along with us will be the base project engineer, the chief of the fuels and water shop, and at least one of the active duty users. Mark your calendars! Hope to see you there!
