We are excited to invite you on a walking tour of the new $22 million Fuel Pier at Langley AFB. As needed, typically every 2 or 3 weeks, a tug boat brings a barge containing an average of 16,000 barrels of jet fuel. Mechanical arms lower onto the barge and the fuel is pumped to the base jet fuel tank farm. Besides environmental and safety concerns of being in and over the water, the project involved special marine equipment with limited height, due to the nearby runway.
If all goes to plan, we’ll meet at the Langley Club (previously named Officer's Club) at 11:30 for lunch. Then at 12:00, we'll have the regular meeting activities, and then possibly a Sustaining Member presentation. After a short presentation of the history and background of the project, we'll go to the Pier to explore, weather permitting. Walking along with us will be the base project engineer, the chief of the fuels and water shop, and at least one of the active duty users. Mark your calendars! Hope to see you there!
Please note that if you do not already have a CAC card, military active duty ID, or military retiree ID, Contractor's Langley access badge you will be required to complete the following spreadsheet to request a 7-day pass.
If anyone needs access passes onto Langley AFB (for any SAME VPP event), please email or call Paul Burgener (information below) with your full name, gender, date of birth, citizenship, and company (via the following spreadsheet). To pick up your pass, stop at the Visitors’ Control Center just outside the Langley AFB (not NASA) LaSalle Ave gate. With your pass, go thru the LaSalle gate, follow Nealy Ave, pass the flags and the static fighter jet display (Memorial Park), turn right at the traffic light onto Hammond Ave, and go straight thru the traffic circle.
