Burns & McDonnell will present on 3-D laser scanning fundamentals and how this technology is being used on a variety of military installations. The 3-D laser scanner uses light and radar to provide accurate distance measurements from an object’s surface to the scanner. The scan of the object’s surface comprises many millions of individual points that are mapped in a three-dimensional XYZ coordinate system, resulting in a point cloud.

The presentation will discuss the entire scanning process including overviews of the equipment used, how the point cloud is created, and how the point cloud is utilized during the design process.Real world examples of government projects that have utilized laser scanning to meet project objectives will be discussed. The presentation will also include a live demonstration of the laser scanning process.
