SAME Centennial Celebration Part II – 22 March 2020
75th Anniversary of the Rhine River Crossing by US Troops in Nierstein; ceremony and keynote speakers
- SAME will join Nierstein in remembering the 75th Anniversary of US Troops Crossing the Rhine. There will be a ceremony at the bridgehead's monument followed by keynote speakers at a nearby winery. Speakers will include an American author who just finished the first English book on the topic, regional politicians, and SAME.
- Nierstein is a beautiful wine town just 18 km south of Mainz. The US Army Engineers constructed a pontoon bridge across the Rhine there in just 18 hours which allowed 60,000 vehicles to pass in just a few days. The expedient crossing is credited with helping draw the war to a quick end and with less casualties.
