Webinar Series: Poly- and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) Introduction, Regulatory Practices, and Management

Presenters: Dave Brayack, PE and Lauren Donston, EI

Event Description: PFAS compounds are present in many common consumer products. For military operations, PFAS is generally of most concern with the use of certain Aqueous Film Forming Foams (AFFF) used to extinguish fires. Training areas for fighting fires, AFFF-based fire suppression systems, and fire departments are of primary interest for release to the environment. Other potential uses of some PFAS compounds are chromium plating, alodizing, and anodizing operations to suppress misting. PFAS compounds are very stable in the environment. Research in the use, toxicity, and fate in the environment is ongoing, but current data indicates that certain PFAS compounds are widespread, can be toxic in very low doses, and remain in the environment for very long periods of time. Response actions are being taken to address the presence of these chemicals in drinking water systems and private water supply wells. Interim treatment systems, consisting mainly of granular activated carbon, are being used to treat water that exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) health advisory level.

Objectives:

  1. Understanding of what PFAS compounds are and identification of two of the most critical ones.
  2. Identifying where PFAS compounds may be and what impacts they might have on the environment and human health.
  3. What is the current state of testing and treatment for these compounds.

Total CEs/PDHs awarded: 1 hour
