Veterans Memorial Park Grand Opening and Dedication
Hwy 26, Highland Ct and 313th Avenue, North Plains, Oregon
The park's grand opening and dedication is on Wednesday, November 11, 2020.
The park will be dedicated to Vern Galaway, a WWII Combat Engineer with the 18th Marine Engineers; his family donated the land. For 46 hours of WWII, the Engineers of the 18th led the way onto the Tarawa Islands in clearing the beaches of entrenched fortifications and obstacles intended to inflict damage and injury to our soldiers.
The park is centered on 100’ tall flag pole with tribute blocks for each branch of the military and POW/MIA. Surrounding the flag pole will be a 500 sf area of “in memory” bricks that can be purchased to honor a veteran. Eventually there will be a piece of military equipment displayed on the site.
The design of the park was completed by members of the SAME Portland Post
Led by Tony Roos, Portland Post Past President (Kittelson & Associates) and Gene Tupper Portland Post Secretary (GRI).
Project sign (4’x6’) mounted at the site.
