Post members participated in the 2024 Mid-Atlantic Future Cities competition held at the Baltimore Museum of Industry in January. The Post sponsors the competition and members participated as judges. This year, Ola Awosika (event coordinator), Ivy Harvey, and Bernie Rabe participated as city model, model presentation, and Q&A judges.
The competition is for middle school students who are engaged in the designing and building creative Cities of the Future. This year’s theme, “Electrify Your City” presented a great challenge for the students as they are expected to research and demonstrate how a future city can be powered completely by electricity. They explored clean, green and renewable energy sources that could power the electrical grid and how these sources would generate enough electricity for industry, transportation, agriculture, residential and commercial uses and how the energy sources can be designed to keep their citizens and the environment healthy and safe.
For the Mid-Atlantic Region, a total of 10 teams reported for the event with their models, team members, team coordinators, school mates and students, as well as family members. Team Volta – Vista from Mount Aviat Academy, won the Baltimore Post “Best Project Plan” Award and also won the overall 1st Place Award of the Competition. Mount Aviat Academy’s team will represent the Mid-Atlantic Region at the upcoming International DiscoverE 2024 Future City Competition in Washington DC, in February.
