2019 Scholarship Recipients

The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Atlanta is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2019 scholarships are Devin Morrison and Moises Rayo. Each year, SAME Atlanta Post awards scholarships in honor of Sy Liebmann and Al Rowe. This year, SAME Atlanta’s overall scholarship program is valued at $5,000.

Devin Morrison was selected for the 2019 Sy Liebman Scholarship for $2,500. Devin was nominated by Jack Seibert, a SAME Atlanta Post Fellow, following his attendance at the 2018 US Air Force Construction and Engineering Camp at Scott AFB, IL, a SAME sponsored camp program. Devin is a SAME Virtual Post member. In the fall of 2018, Devin assisted with his high school STEM day by assisting with the SAME National STEM booth and presentation.

Devin has completed 4 years of JROTC at Marietta High School, where he maintained a 3.3 grade point average, and plans to continue his ROTC training as a student at Kennesaw State University. He will enroll in the college ROTC program and plans to become an Air Force Officer upon graduation. His overall goal is to obtain a Mechanical (Mechatronics) Engineering Degree and use that as an Air Force Officer to improve national security by using unmanned drones. He has already started college at Kennesaw State University and is enrolled in summer session.

Devin was highly recommended by his high school JROTC instructor, CMSgt. Lose G. Alfaro, for his dedication and leadership, having held the most leadership positions during his four years of JROTC. In his final year at Marietta High School, Devin was selected as the Deputy Support Commander and was responsible for 10 different teams consisting of 80 cadets as well as $5,000 in weapons and equipment within the Armory.

The 2019 Al Rowe Scholarship for $2,500 is awarded to Moises Rayo. Moises is an intern with Atlanta Post Sustaining Member Firm, EGSci Consulting, Inc., Engineering, Geophysics & Geosciences, and was nominated by, Shelly Keary, M.Sc., P.E. of EGSci.

Moises began his college career at the University of North Georgia – Dahlonega, GA, and transferred to Georgia Tech in the Spring of 2017 to study Civil Engineering. He has maintained a grade-point average above a 3.25, while assisting his father in his business. He is the first in his family to attend college, let alone to graduate high school. Additionally, his grades throughout the years have been consistent, which conveys his determination in his studies. A course that was challenging to him was physics due to the concepts and mathematics involved. Taking that course drove him to apply himself and taught him not to run away from a challenge, but to instead face it head on. Lastly, having parents who don’t quite understand the English language very well, he continues to provide assistance to his parents.

Moises has a hands-on, can-do, all-in attitude, which makes him both a pleasant and integral part of the EGSci team. While balancing school requirements and work demands, Moises has maintained dependability at EGSci. He is forthright in relaying his schedule, arrives as communicated, and is focused and organized while at work. Moises is comfortable and functional working both independently and as part of a team; he is a problem-solver possessing the wisdom to ask for guidance or advice when needed. Moises has demonstrated his eagerness (and capability) to learn, asks how and where he can help, and has proven himself a diligent and attentive employee.
