Portland Post Bud Ossey Scholarship

Bud Ossey Scholarship

Bernard A. ‘Bud’ Ossey
Nov. 5, 1919 – July 23, 2021

Bud Ossey was born in Odessa, Russia and immigrated to Portland, Ore., through Ellis Island escaping the hardships of the Russian Revolution with his mother before his first birthday. His father would follow them arriving in Portland four years later. A lifelong and proud Portlander, Bud graduated from Irvington Grade School and Benson High School before entering Oregon State College in 1937 graduating with a Civil Engineering degree in 1943. In 1942 he married his high school sweetheart Maxine and celebrated 70 years of marriage before her death in 2013.

Bud proudly served in the U.S. Army in World War II and remained in the U.S. Army Reserves for over 25 years where he retired as a Lt. Colonel. Following WWII, Bud began a career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Portland that spanned over 36 years where he specialized in hydroelectric design of powerhouses in the Pacific Northwest. Just one month before his death, Bud received a pin from the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) honoring his 75 years of membership, the first and only such recipient. SAME has further honored him with the Bud Ossey Scholarship to be awarded annually to engineering students in Oregon.

Bud had an outgoing personality and easily made friends in many circles. From bowling leagues to square dancing, Bud and Maxine led a vibrant life. Raising three boys, sports was a big part of Bud’s life coaching all three sons. An avid golfer, Bud was a member of Tualatin Country Club for over 50 years where he played up to the age of 96, shooting his age every year since he was 69.

Bud’s biggest passion, outside of his family, was everything Oregon State. Bud attended his first football game in Corvallis in 1924 while visiting his father who was studying engineering. Bud was a student, varsity tennis player, rook basketball player, fan, supporter, fundraiser and started the OSU/Ossey Scramble, now in its 50th year at Tualatin Country Club which supports the golf program at Oregon State. The indoor golf practice facility at Gill Coliseum is now called the Bud and Maxine Ossey Golf Center. In 2013, Bud was recipient of the Martin Chaves Lifetime Achievement Award for Athletics at Oregon State. He also is a member of the school’s engineering hall of fame.
