The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), the premier professional military engineering association in the United States, unites architecture, engineering, construction (A/E/C), facility management and environmental entities and individuals in the public and private sectors to prepare for—and overcome—natural and man-made disasters, and to improve security at home and abroad.  Headquartered in Alexandria, VA, SAME provides its more than 27,000 members extensive opportunities for training, education and professional development through a robust offering of conferences, workshops, networking events and publications. With a membership that includes recent service academy graduates and retired flag officers, project managers and corporate executives, Department of Defense civilians, private-sector experts and everyone in between, SAME is bridging the gaps between critical stakeholders to advance the field of military engineering and help secure our nation.

The Society of American Military Engineers is the only nonprofit professional engineering education organization that actively promotes the advancement of both individual technical knowledge and the collective engineering capabilities of governments, the uniformed services and private industry.  Our goal is to unite public and private sector entities and individuals in the A/E/C fields so that we can prepare for and overcome natural and man made disasters, acts of terrorism and improve security at home and abroad.

The Hampton Roads Post accomplishes this goal locally by supporting monthly luncheon meetings and other professional/social activities attended by members of local government, military, private industry, students and other interested parties. These meetings are announced via our e-mail distribution list and quarterly newsletter. We are supported by the national Society of American Military Engineers and publications such as The Military Engineer, which also promotes the interests and goals of our society and its members. Please peruse our website to discover the benefits of SAME Hampton Roads Post membership.

Sustaining Members of the Month:

Voluntary Covid-19 Vaccination Encouragement

At this time, The Society of American Military Engineers, Hampton Roads Post, is returning to in-person monthly meetings, forums and sessions and is encouraging voluntary Covid-19 vaccination of all members who seek to participate in these in-person events. In accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia and United States CDC guidelines, SAME seeks to provide and maintain a gathering place and workplace that is free of known hazards and the Hampton Roads Board strongly encourages all members and guests to receive this vaccination to minimize the risk of this infectious disease, especially in light of the new Delta and Lambda variants. This encouragement is in concert with recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Commonwealth of Virginia Covid-19 Task Force and with local Hampton Roads health officials. Members and guests are encouraged to obtain any Covid vaccination wherever they choose.

Afghan Refugee Family Assistance Drive

SAME HR Post is conducting a Afghan Refugee Family Assistance Drive. Many Afghan refugee families are being housed on various military bases throughout Virginia, including Fort Belvoir, Fort Lee, Fort Pickett and Naval Station Dam Neck. These families left Afghanistan with only what they could carry, leaving their lives and almost all belongings behind. These families, including men, women, children of all ages, are in need of everything that we take for granted, especially clothing, toiletries, hygiene kits, and shoes.

If you can, we ask that you donate any unwanted clothing and shoes, that are in good condition. Simply bring them in a bag, box or bin, to a SAME meeting and John Crossen, in coordination with Team Rubicon, will take care of the rest. We are also accepting Walmart, Target, Food Lion, etc. gift cards to help these mothers and fathers feed and take care of their children. These people had our backs in Afghanistan, we should have their backs in the United States.

John Crossen, SAME Hampton Roads Board, is the Team Rubicon liaison for Hampton Roads and the Peninsula. If organizations wish to set up collection boxes in their offices, simply coordinate pickup with John and he and Team Rubicon will ensure that it is all distributed to the families.

For more information, please contact John Crossen at: jacrossen98@yahoo.com

ForKids Holiday Toy Drive

Please bring a new, unwrapped toy to the November Post meeting at the Westin to benefit the local ForKids organization. Toys are distributed throughout our community to those in need by ForKids. Previous years the SAME HR Post has demonstrated very strong community support through our annual toy drive and we anticipate 2021 to be stronger than ever. Gifts of any type are needed, regardless of age, gender, etc.
