2024 SAME Foundation Donor Impact Report
Fostering Engineering Leadership for the Nation
From the Board Chair and President:

As Board Chair and President of the SAME Foundation, I am proud to share our 2024 Donor Impact Report. This year, thanks to the unwavering support of our generous donors, we built upon the success of 2023 in tangible ways, reaching more youth, students, and young professionals across our programs to strengthen the pipeline of engineering talent for our nation.
The awe-inspiring support of our donors this year—over $560,000 in donations and grants—allowed us to provide more than just programs and experiences for the next generation. It allowed us to provide opportunities. Opportunities for students discovering the possibilities in STEM, opportunities for communities seeking greater security, and opportunities for professionals looking to take the lead on some of the most pressing issues facing our nation today.
Our Leader Development Program continues to be a leading example of how investing in tomorrow’s engineering talent pays long-term dividends. In 2024, we celebrated the graduation of the 18 participants of the fifth cohort and welcomed a new class of 19 young and mid-career professionals. Most importantly, these graduates are making an impact across the industry as they step up to lead ambitious projects, address long-standing challenges, and take the helm at public and private organizations. Read more about the impact they are making today, and the promise they hold for tomorrow, in this year’s report.
The STEM Pathways Program marked a banner year in 2024, with a record $159,000 secured through your generous donations and grants from the Baker Hughes Foundation and the United Engineering Foundation. This mark of confidence in our program allowed us to reach not only over 1,500 students in underserved communities but also conduct a first-of-its-kind symposium tailored for industry and engineering professionals to listen and learn on how to best partner with Indigenous communities to complete project work.
The awe-inspiring support of our donors this year—over $560,000 in donations and grants—allowed us to provide more than just programs and experiences for the next generation. It allowed us to provide opportunities.
Maj. Gen. Timothy Byers, F.SAME (Dist.), USAF (Ret.), SAME Foundation Board Chair
SAME’s STEM/Engineering & Construction Camps also reached new heights in 2024 with the addition of a new, fifth national camp held at Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Fla. and over $49,000 in funding provided by the SAME Foundation. With its addition, we celebrated a record 265 campers, supported by 116 mentors who ensured that each student not only learned about STEM, but saw a future for themselves in the profession. Your support, through contributions to our Camps Mentoring Program, made this possible.
Our Foundation remains committed to operating with transparency, efficiency, and purpose. I’m proud to acknowledge our continued Platinum Seal from Candid (GuideStar) and our four-star rating with Charity Navigator.
Looking ahead to 2025, we are building on success. The momentum is real. The impact is measurable. The vision is clear: to prepare and empower the next generation of engineering leaders. On behalf of myself and the entire Foundation, I’d like to thank you for being part of this journey. The future for our nation is full of possibility, and together, we will continue to secure and shape it.
With my deepest thanks,

Maj. Gen. Timothy Byers, F.SAME (Dist.), USAF (Ret.), SAME Foundation Board Chair
The SAME Foundation is committed to investing in programs that provide Society members, America’s youth, veterans, and others in the engineering community with unmatched opportunities to develop and grow personally and professionally. Cultivating Talent, Building Leadership
The Leader Development Program (LDP) continued to make exceptional strides in 2024, developing the professionals essential to address the future engineering needs of our nation. This flagship program, entirely underwritten by the SAME Foundation, cultivates high-potential members across military, government, and the A/E/C industry and prepares them to lead with purpose and vision.
In 2024, the 2023-2024 Class, comprising 18 participants, graduated a new class, and the 2024-2025 LDP Class, with 19 members, began their journey. Participants hailed from 14 different states, as well as Japan, Korea, England, and Turkey, reflecting a truly global and diverse talent pool. Each participant in the LDP commits to, on average, 120 hours of dedicated leadership training over the course of the year.
Participants in the yearlong curriculum prove their newly gained leadership skills with the completion of an Utilization Project Implementation Capstone (UPIC), a self-directed project that advances the mission of SAME or addresses major challenges facing the A/E/C profession, and the projects carried out over the last year continued the tradition of LDP graduates making outsized impacts on our nation’s engineering future.
“My participation in the LDP was a pivotal moment in my career, directly contributing to my ability to guide and grow Harkins Builders. The mentorship, coaching, and connections I gained have made me a more effective leader, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful.”
Ben Nichols, LEED AP, President & CEO, Harkins Builders, 2019-2020 LDP Class Member
UPICs In Action
Cradle to STEM
Megan Windeknecht; Lt. Chibuzor Oziligbo, P.E., PMP, CEC, USN; and Christopher Artz, P.E., CHMM

During the 2024 SBC in New Orleans, La., three members of the 2024-2025 LDP Class carried out their “Cradle to STEM” project, which involved hosting a STEM Fair in conjunction with the local Boys & Girls Clubs. This project was designed to reach economically disadvantaged K-8 students and focused on hands-on learning experiences such as bridge building, water filtration, and coastal erosion experiments.
In addition to this STEM outreach, the team developed a toolbox for implementing similar events at future conferences, ensuring that their efforts could scale across the country. To prove the efficacy of their toolbox of resources, the team held another STEM outreach event in conjunction with the SAME 2025 JETC in Louisville, Ky., reaching a new audience of disadvantaged youth.

Defense Acquisition University Webinar Series
Sam Barnett

This UPIC developed, in collaboration with the Defense Acquisition University (DAU), a series of webinars to address critical topics for federal contracting and acquisition professionals, including construction delivery methods (specifically Design-Build), the Partnering Playbook and its role in federal acquisition strategies and reversing the shrinking contractor base, and risk sharing in contingency environments.
In developing this webinar series, Barnett built a collaborative framework consisting of SAME stakeholders and external stakeholders, including DAU, USACE, NAVFAC, the Air Force, and FBI acquisition and program officials. Each session averaged 280 attendees, but more critically, the webinar series empowered Department of Defense acquisition personnel with the skills and insights needed to modernize procurement strategies.
STEM Camp in Hawai’i
Alyssa Augustin, PMP, and Samantha Long, PMP

In 2024, 500 students applied to attend SAME’s STEM/Engineering & Construction Camps, but due to funding and space constraints, only 270 slots were available. To expand capacity and increase STEM outreach, this UPIC project held a three-day STEM Camp at Camp Paumalu on O’ahu’s north shore in February 2025.
Led by LDP members and a team comprised of 28 volunteers, 10 corporate sponsors, local SAME Posts, and the SAME Foundation, the camp successfully brought high schoolers together to learn about STEM possibilities, gain hands-on exposure to projects and problem-solving, and interact with engineering mentors. Plans are underway to continue this success by integrating the camp into SAME’s national camps program, which would expand capacity by up to an additional 100 students each year.

Graduates Leading the Way
Capstone projects, however, are only the beginning of the impact made by these leaders. LDP graduates have gone on to take leadership positions in their service branches, companies, and volunteer organizations. In 2024, 18 Post Presidents were graduates of LDP. Graduates also continued to take on leadership at regional and national levels within the Society.

Building Futures at STEM Camps
SAME’s STEM/Engineering & Construction Camps have been providing students with a chance to see what a career in the A/E/C industry might be like for over two decades. Year after year, the camps programs have successfully delivered on sparking curiosity, building confidence, and inspiring futures.
With strong financial support from the SAME Foundation and a one-of-a-kind partnership with the military services, in 2024, this program added a new Camp experience at Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Fla., allowing the program to set a new record of 265 students in attendance across all five national camps.
“I’ve definitely learned valuable skills at this camp, particularly those that will be useful in my future career,”
Lauren Wilhelm, 2024 NAS Jacksonville camper
At the heart of these camps are the mentors: engineering professionals who volunteer their time and energy to walk side-by-side with students throughout the week. They coach, guide, and model what it means to be an engineer. For many campers, the experience leaves a lasting impression that many point to as the reason they choose to pursue STEM careers or military service.
Through the Camp Mentoring Program, the SAME Foundation helps reduce the financial burden for these mentors. Last year, this program was instrumental in bringing 116 mentors to camps across the country. In particular, the program opened the door for more young professionals and enlisted members to mentor the next generation of engineering leaders.

About the SAME Foundation
In 2016, with a vision to strengthen and expand the philanthropic efforts of SAME and the lasting contributions of its members, partners, and stakeholders in every phase of progress in the engineering, architecture, and construction fields over the last century, the SAME Foundation was established to “foster engineering leadership for the nation.”
The SAME Foundation supports programs that help introduce youth to STEM, support them on their journey to STEM careers, and develop emerging leaders within the A/E/C profession. Signature efforts include the SAME Leader Development Program, Camps Mentoring Program, and STEM Pathways Program. The SAME Foundation also provides a secure and beneficial repository for charitable and other bequeaths from members of the Society and the public. A total of 15 SAME Posts maintain their charitable funds in the Foundation as separate, restricted lines.
2024 SAME Foundation Financial Summary
At the end of 2024, the SAME Foundation held $5.043 million in total assets (compared to $4.496 million at the end of 2023). That includes $2.822 million in restricted funds managed on behalf of Posts (these are managed separately as restricted accounts but contribute to the overall portfolio and help lower administrative fees).
