Reserve Hotel RoomFPD Training: From Legacy Headquarters to Modern Design: U.S. Military Heritage in Frankfurt – Innovation and Application for Planners
The Federal Planning Division (FPD) will host a Pre-Conference Workshop to provide in person training to Europe-based planners and other design professionals. This training opportunity will provide 6 hours of Certification Maintenance (CM) credits through a guided walking tour of the Westend Campus of Goethe University in Frankfurt coupled with presentations from the University as well as the local German Bauamt (building authority), responsible for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of public buildings and spaces.
Participants will have an opportunity to explore the former “Pentagon of Europe”, built from 1928-1930 and contrast that with recently added modern university buildings such as the “House of Finance”, built in a style that complements the “New Objectivity” style of the original I.G. Farben Building, and forms this campus in the heart of the city. Further, participants will have the opportunity to tour an example of modular timber construction (temporary construction) at the nearby Adorno-Gymnasium (High School), highlighting the differences in the execution of construction standards. The tour will include time for a group lunch (additional cost) that will allow time to informally discuss the history and architecture of the campus as experienced.
Tour highlights include:
- Westend Campus of Goethe University
- I.G. Farben Building, including the Paternoster Lifts
- House of Finance
- PEG Building and Courtyards
- Adorno Gymnasium
Learning Objectives
- Participants will learn about the history of the I.G. Farben Building and its role in post-WW II Germany, from both an architectural and historical perspective.
- Participants will gain an understanding of how the campus was developed over time to its current state by learning local processes and building practices. An understanding of sustainability and resilience features will be gained.
- Participants will see a successful application of a temporary, prefabricated and modular facility and understand how these techniques and building materials can be applied for U.S. use to provide quality and resilient facilities in an expeditious manner.
- Participants will develop skills in cross-cultural collaboration by engaging with German planning authorities and university experts, gaining insights into how international partnerships can enhance the planning, design, and delivery of resilient public facilities.
