On April 8, 2025, the SAME Baltimore Post held the Easy as Pi STEM event at the historic Garrett-Jacobs Mansion home to the Engineer’s Club in downtown Baltimore. Easy as Pi Co-Chairs Rosemarie Potocky (from Arcadis) and Ivy Harvey (from EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC) organized the event. Approximately 90 middle school students from Anne Arundel County and Baltimore City were in attendance. The day included 3 one-hour sessions where students were divided into five smaller groups based on their interests. During each session, students learned about different STEM fields and were given the opportunity to learn, interact, play games, build, and ask questions. Speakers included representatives from the following organizations:
- American Industrial Hygiene Association (Ashton Alban, Ryan Hines, Chelsea Connor, Chiran Witanachchi, and Daeva Paskausky) presenting industrial hygiene in the workplace;
- Maryland Department of Transportation (Dr. Richard Woo, Leo Gray, Hua Xiang, Steve Wyatt, Giorgios Arnas, Zachary Mohler, Chris Lokey) presenting the future of transportation with autonomous vehicles;
- Maryland Science Center (Hannah Meredith and Rock Delliquanti) learning about liquid nitrogen; and;
- US Naval Academy (Dr. Sarah Durkin, LCDR (ret) Ray Guethler, Antje Hlavaty, Kris Endy, Joe McGettigan) presenting:
- Constructing a hydraulic arm to investigate mechanical advantage and force at a distance and;
- Building a tensegrity super-ball to investigate tension/compression forces and their application in space.
Special thank you to the speakers, the Engineer’s Club, students, and Easy as Pi committee. If you are interested in volunteering for Easy as Pi in 2026, please contact Rosemarie Potocky (rosemarie.potocky@arcadis.com) or Ivy Harvey (IHarvey@eaest.com).
