Colbert Medal

The Colbert Medal is named in honor of Rear Adm. Leo Otis Colbert who was the third director of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, predecessor of the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps, and oversaw its operations during World War II. The medal is presented annually at the SAME Joint Engineer Training Conference to a member of NOAA, officer or civilian, active or retired, in recognition of the most outstanding contribution to engineering through achievement in design, construction, administration, research, or development.

Eligibility
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer; active or retired
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration civilian employee; active or retired
Nomination Criteria

For outstanding contribution to engineering through achievement in design, construction, administration, research, or development. Please contact the NOAA Service Liaison for information about the Uniformed Service Awards nomination process.  SAME provides a formal ceremony for recipients.
