Webinar | The National Spatial Reference System: Modernizing Our Geodetic Foundation for the Future

Thursday, April 16, 2026 | 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

About the Webinar

The National Geodetic Survey (NGS), within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is in the process of making the critical transition from the current National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) to the upcoming, modernized (2022) system.

This webinar will highlight the importance of the NSRS while reviewing the limitations of the existing datums and digging into the benefits of the modernized system, including its unique embrace of time-dependency which allows the system to account for changing coordinates due to tectonic motion, sea level rise, and other factors. The talk will outline how surveyors and engineers can prepare their workflows for the transition to the modernized NSRS, including updates to current NGS tools, as well as planned capabilities that will become available after the initial rollout.
