Community Mission
The mission of the Sustainment Management System (SMS) Working Group within the Facility Asset Management (FAM) community is to expand the knowledge base, share lessons learned, increase collaborative engagements, and advocate for continuous improvement in asset visibility, condition assessment and proactive facility management. Our aim is to ensure that the SMS methodology and resulting data are imbedded in readiness and resourcing discissions to support a risk-informed framework based on facility condition and performance. Positioned within the FAM COI, the SMS Working Group provides cross-disciplinary support in facility and infrastructure lifecycle asset management to the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME).

The objectives of the SMS Working Group are multifaceted:
- Facilitate training programs and workshops and promote workforce development that expands SMS knowledge and understanding across the DoD, federal government, and industry.
- Disseminate best practices and establish clear process flows that enhance and accelerate capabilities in lifecycle asset management, condition assessment, key performance indicators, and facility investment decision-making for DoD installation real property.
- Develop and maintain an information repository for sharing valuable resources, case studies, and lessons learned. Leverage past and existing efforts related to the implementation and analysis of SMS and related tools and processes.
- Increase industry engagement through active involvement in the development of accessible and integrated tools for facility management. Evaluate and recommend innovative solutions that improve asset visibility, facility maintenance and repair, and performance analysis.
- Promote the use of standards and best practices for real property asset management at military installations. Ensure alignment with national and international standards and benchmarks through collaboration with industry experts and stakeholders.
- Engage with leadership in industry and government to foster partnerships and cross-functional initiatives with other working groups, government agencies, and industry partners that enhance synergy and knowledge exchange.
- Encourage the use of data-driven decision making through analytics and predictive modeling strategies. Measure and report on the effectiveness of these strategies.
- Advocate for policies and funding that support development and advancement of tools and technology that improve on asset management capabilities. Participate in policy discussions to represent the interests and insights of the federal real property asset management community.
- Continuously assess and refine processes that aim to improve the performance, reliability, and sustainability of military facilities. Implement feedback mechanisms to evaluate impact and identify areas for improvement.
- Ensuring that lifecycle asset management considerations and SMS tools and data are integrated into the project planning and execution phases.
