Society of American Military Engineers

Founded in 1920, the Society of American Military Engineers builds leaders and leads collaboration among government and industry to develop multi-disciplined solutions to national security infrastructure challenges. With a National Office in Alexandria, Va., and more than 100 Posts and Field Chapters around the world, the Society unites public and private sector individuals and organizations from across the architecture, engineering, construction, environmental and facility management, cyber security, and contracting and acquisition disciplines.

SAME was born from the lessons of World War I and the realization of those who went “over there” that the engineering community was unprepared for what was confronted. That prescient leadership would prove invaluable, as “The War to End All Wars” was anything but. As we begin our second century in 2020, our vision to serve our nation as the foremost integrator for leadership development and technical collaboration within the A/E/C profession echoes the motivations of SAME’s founders, who, very clearly valuing diversity of thought and the benefits of many perspectives, proclaimed that “eligibility qualifications for membership in this Society are drawn on the broadest possible lines, consistent with the achievement of its aims.”

SAME is vital and enduring. And after 100 years, our role has never been more clear: Let's help secure America's future, together.

SAME Statement & Action on Coronavirus | Announcing Virtual JETC!

As you know, SAME made the decision to not hold the 2020 JETC in-person as originally planned due to the nation's collective response efforts to COVID-19 and because venues in Washington, D.C., have been declared closed past our scheduled dates. We have replaced the anticipation of our Centennial Kickoff with the same zeal for a new opportunity to adapt and serve our members. We have been hard at work with speakers/participants, and industry and government stakeholders to re-conceive a virtual offering of many of the education and training components that make JETC so valuable. An overwhelming number of those subject matter experts we reached out to responded by saying: "I'm all in! Count on me to deliver my content via any method."

We are now excited to announce that SAME is planning to host a "Virtual JETC" beginning May 27, when JETC was originally scheduled to start!

Virtual JETC will allow attendees to take in as much of the content as possible, while being mindful of the additional personal and professional challenges individuals are facing this spring. The program we are planning will better allow attendees to fit in their participation within their schedules, which we know are more complex than in a typical year. Sessions can be experienced in a live virtual environment or by recording to access at a later date. PDH credits will be available for all education and training sessions!

Virtual JETC will provide professional development and networking opportunities-most importantly, it will allow you to connect with colleagues, enhance your knowledge base, and strengthen your company and agency at what is a pivotal time for the industry and the nation.

The Society’s National Leadership Team and SAME National Office have been exploring alternative options for how to hold some of JETC's other key elements (such as the Society Awards, Fellows Investiture, and LDP graduation) in another fashion or location. We will have more information to share in the future. The work that SAME members, partners, and stakeholders do is vital to national security—and building relationships and trust through their interactions in the Society has been a critical part of how they do it for 100 years. While right now the focus must be on containing the spread of coronavirus, we look forward to being able to come back together when the time is right, celebrate our Centennial with those who have built SAME's legacy of service, and kick off our second century of impact to our nation, and our profession.

SAME is dedicated to the health and safety of all its members and event participants, both nationally and at our Posts. Many of our Posts are hosting virtual meetings, webinars, social activities, and even scholarship selection boards. Search the national calendar of events for a list of virtual offerings. We thank you for your understanding during these unprecedented circumstances in order to help contain the spread of the coronavirus. Please continue to check the SAME website for updates.
