In a testament to the enduring power of collaboration and education in shaping the engineers of tomorrow, the Omaha District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Omaha Post joined forces to present the Engineering Workshop 2024. Held in Elkhorn, Nebraska, this event marked a significant milestone in community engagement and STEM education, attracting over 100 middle and high school students with a keen interest in the engineering and construction industries.
The workshop was inaugurated with an insightful overview of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, courtesy of Omaha District Commander Colonel Robert Newbauer. This set the stage for a series of engaging and educational activities designed to highlight the vast opportunities and exciting challenges within the field of engineering.
A central feature of the day was the innovative bridge-building exercise, where students utilized popsicle sticks and glue to construct bridges. This hands-on activity not only encouraged creativity and problem-solving but also fostered a competitive spirit among the participants. The competition culminated in a victory for the team from Gross Catholic High School, whose bridge astoundingly supported 61 pounds, showcasing the potential and ingenuity of future engineers.
The success of the workshop was further amplified by the active involvement of several Omaha District and SAME Omaha Post representatives, including Brendan Kight, Chief of Construction; Dustin Davis, Deputy Chief of Construction; Kristle Beaudet, Civil Engineer; Justin Farag, Structural Engineer; Stephen Castellane, Environmental Engineer; Kelley Daniels, Strategic Integration Manager; Jeff Bohlken, Deputy Chief P3MD; Timothy Myers, Project Engineer; and Brandon Sellers, Senior Project Engineer. Their participation underscored the collective commitment to fostering a nurturing environment for budding STEM professionals.
Reflecting on the Engineering Workshop 2024, the collaborative effort between the Omaha District and SAME Omaha Post signifies a pivotal step forward in engaging and inspiring the next generation. This initiative serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community outreach in cultivating a diverse and skilled workforce ready to face the engineering challenges of the future.
Through such collaborative endeavors, the Omaha District and SAME Omaha Post continue to demonstrate their dedication to making a tangible impact in the community and ensuring a bright future for STEM fields. The success of this workshop heralds a promising outlook for continued partnership in educating and inspiring young minds, laying the groundwork for innovation and excellence in engineering.
